Web Design

Since the inception of the internet, designing appealing web sites has been a major concern of online webmasters. In the early days most websites were designed simply as plain HTML web pages. New languages and standards have led to websites designed in PHP, Java, and flash. The basic principles of what makes an appealing website remains the same.

Some websites focus more on information than on design. Sometimes these sites can do this without any problem as they may be the final source on this information. These sites generally are government or educational institutions. These sites can usually be identified by their .gov or .edu URL.

Most websites generally use the .com ending for their URL. Some other popular ones are .org, .net, and .info. Regardless of what the URL of a website is the goal remains the same, to provide an aesthetically pleasing as well as informative, educational, or entertaining product.

Some general principles to keep in mind when designing a website are easy to follow. Colors are vital to a websites design. It is best to keep varying colors to a minimum. Too many colors can create distracting visuals that strain the eyes. The color of the text of a website should also be clearly visible and not in a contrast that strains the eyes. Another improtant aspect of a website is the navigation between pages. Navigation menus should be clearly defined and easily found on or near the top part of the page. Consistency is also key, if you are coding your own website, keeping every page consistent in design is desirable.
